Episode 39
Aug. 10th, 2009 11:04 am39
Rude considered his options as he carried
He thought of his people, waiting for him to return. He thought of how this would unite them and end the constant friction once and for all. He thought of
He pushed the thought away and carried her light little body out to where the drivers had parked the various cars.
He rapped on the window and barked, “Home,” startling the driver into wakefulness.
As the car shifted into gear and pulled away, Rude moved to sit across from
At the first shriek of the alarms, Genesis grabbed on to both Reeve and Yuffie and said, “The building is burning!” Wild eyed, he cried, “Reeve, darling, you must get me out of here at once or I shall faint dead away, I swear it!”
“If you do, you shall burn merrily away, I swear it,” Reeve hissed, craning his head around to see where the exits were. The crowds swarmed around them, fighting for access to the main doors while the journalists outside snapped photographs of the chaos.
“How about the back?” Cloud asked, nodding his head in the direction of the wait-staff, who had all disappeared in the direction of the kitchen.
Reeve pushed Yuffie back a step and she swayed dangerously, moaning a little and completely oblivious to the danger. He nodded and said, “Yes, the back is the best option.”
He bent and scooped Yuffie up in his arms and Genesis swooned, sobbing, “I feel ill! I think I’m succumbing to the smoke! I feel so faint!”
Cloud glanced at the tall, slim redhead and said, “Well, I’m not carrying you. Besides, I saw Mrs. ShinRa’s bodyguard pull the alarm. I think he wanted to get her out of here. There certainly doesn’t seem to be a fire.”
Genesis glared at him and abruptly straightened, hissing, “Well, aren’t we the little investigator, hm?”
“Will you two stop?” Reeve asked, struggling to keep Yuffie’s boneless body in the cup of his arms. He glared from Cloud to Genesis and headed back towards the kitchen doors, wobbling under the weight of Yuffie’s body.
Genesis poked his tongue out at Cloud and said, “I never did like you, Strife.”
“Yeah, well, there’s a line,” Cloud said, shrugging. He took a few shots of the panicked crowd and then headed after Reeve with Genesis pouting in his wake.
Reeve cast around the empty kitchen and spied the service door to the loading docks, saying, “Yes, this way. We brought the paintings in through here, there’s a way out.”
He pushed his way through, feeling quite heroic with the passed out, supposed Princess in his arms, and hit the night air with a sigh of relief.
“Reeve, darling, what of your paintings?” Genesis asked, glancing back towards the interior with a frown. “If there truly is a fire, they will all be gone!”
“I can make more,” Reeve said, thought the idea of losing his work made him ill. It would be a waste of half his life if that place went up in flames, and he knew there was no way he could replace what amounted to detailed memories of his life. “Let’s just hope you’re right and there is no fire.”
“There isn’t,” Cloud said, confident of that. He watched Reeve struggling down the few short steps of the loading dock and went after him, saying, “Here, you got it all wrong.”
“I beg your pardon?” Reeve asked, stopping.
Cloud lifted Yuffie from Reeve’s arms and slung her over one shoulder like a sack of potatoes. With a wink and a grin, he told the startled painter, “Don’t worry, she’s used to this. I’ll take her home, don’t bother about it.”
“To her home?” Reeve asked, suspicious, and his tone made Genesis scowl.
“Does it matter?” Cloud asked, laughing. “Look, Reeve, Yuffie loves everybody, you catch my drift? She usually doesn’t puke on their shoes, but she loves them all the same. Don’t take her seriously.”
“I wasn’t!” Reeve said, indignant, drawing up to his full height, which wasn’t much taller than Cloud’s.
“Yeah, okay,” Cloud snickered, and turned away with Yuffie’s arms swinging down behind him, her hair swaying with every step. “For a lesbian, she’s a real man eater, so it’s best not to get involved.”
“I am not involved!” Reeve snapped, but Cloud was already on his way to where he’d parked his car, and didn’t respond.
Reeve turned to find Genesis leaning against the side of the dock with his arms crossed and a disapproving look on his face.
“I’m not!” Reeve insisted, and returned the scowl. “It isn’t your business anyway, I remind you! We are not dating! You are not my boyfriend! I wouldn’t date you if you were the last gender-confused man on earth!”
Genesis rolled his eyes and coolly stated, “Likewise, Reeve. Though it has, undoubtedly, escaped your notice, I have managed to launch you into Midgarian society like a goddamned pleasure liner. All of the scandal I have managed to create around you will merely keep your patrons vying for your attention.”
He pushed away from the wall with a careless sigh and flicked his hair back.
“A morally rigid, pussy-whipped, facial hair-toting, saint of a painter isn’t exactly my idea of the perfect boyfriend,” he said. “Now, do you want a ride home, or do you want to further discuss how ill-suited we are for one another?”
Reeve opened and closed his mouth several times, but he finally managed to say, “I am not morally rigid!”
One of Genesis’s elegant eyebrows rose over one sparkling, amused blue eye and he purred, “Prove it.”
“I suppose that’s a nice rack,” Rufus commented, tipping his head to consider Elena’s breasts. “A bit on the small side, really. Can’t you get implants?”
Elena took a deep breath to stabilize her patience and sweetly said, “I didn’t want implants, thank you. Some men prefer smaller breasts.”
“True,” Rufus agreed, and then pointed out, “But then they usually prefer another part of the anatomy over it, and you don’t really have an ass, either.”
“Could you stop analyzing my faults for three seconds and just let me do my job?” she flared, staring him down.
Rufus chuckled drunkenly into his glass and murmured in a stage whisper, “Someone is having pregnancy-induced psychosis!”
“Do you want to do this or not?” Elena demanded, hands on her slender hips, standing there in just her thong and five-inch heels.
“You look a little like Wonder Woman when you stand like that,” Rufus told her, and added in a vague tone, “But with less breasts.”
“I’ll blow you, shall I?” Elena growled, offended. She’d never had problems attracting men and none of them had ever complained about her packaging before. She was ready to throttle Rufus, and was understanding more and more why
“I’ve got nothing against Wonder Woman!” Rufus cried, feigning hurt. He put his glass down with an unsteady hand and asked, “Could you wiggle around a little or something? I’m not really in the mood yet.”
Elena rolled her eyes and sauntered over to him, reaching up to cup her breasts and run her thumbs over her tight pink nipples.
“I bet your wife has got nothing on me,” she purred, smirking, rolling her hips as she walked.
Rufus uttered a short, sharp laugh and said with an odd amount of true amusement, “My dear, you have no idea.”
“I…I really shouldn’t,” Zack whispered, but it came out as weak as he felt. He glanced from Mei Li to Kadaj and felt torn. It had been so long since he’d been touched, so long since he’d shared that closeness, but he firmly believed that there should be some kind of emotional attachment to the person he touched. He’d had his share of faceless, loveless sex in the Brotherhood and he’d vowed that he would never just sleep with someone.
He had a choice now, he could say no. There was no one forcing him to stay.
So why was he?
“Why should you not?” Mei Li purred, and reached out to rest her long fingers on his shoulder, the red lacquer of her talons gleaming in the soft light. She cocked her head, her heavy-lidded eyes and full mouth giving her an indolent, cat-like look. When she smiled, Zack jerked away from her, frightened of her all over again. He still clearly remembered that night when Kadaj had tried to burn the place down – he’d smelled the blood, he’d seen her sink her nails into
“Leave him be,” Kadaj softly called, still stroking
Mei Li laughed and asked, “What does that have to do with pleasure?”
That hand slid up his neck and she looked at him intently. Zack was so busy trying to keep his focus that he only realized that she was searching for his Brotherhood brand once it was too late. Her fingers traced the raised, slick skin beneath the heavy shock of his hair and she purred, “Ah, so I was not wrong…”
Zack grabbed her wrist and pushed her hand away, saying, “It doesn’t concern you.”
Mei Li merely smiled and tugged him by the hand to the bed before she crawled up next to
“Zack,” Kadaj said, his eyes strangely blank. “You don’t have to.”
“I know,” Zack said, and started to undress.
“God, now I remember why I don’t like you,” Cloud breathed, grunting with effort as he carried Yuffie up the last flight of stairs to his apartment. Damn that broken elevator anyway. He’d have to call maintenance first thing in the morning, or else stop bringing home inebriated guests.
He unlocked his apartment and managed to get inside with Yuffie still relatively on his shoulder, though she was sliding fast. He plopped her down on the couch, locked his door, and went to the fridge for a beer, drinking it with relish.
“You’re still a pain in the ass,” he told her, knowing she couldn’t hear him. But he felt better bitching her out a little, and negligently tossed a throw-blanket over her to add magnanimous to his good feeling. He went back to his computer to check his mail and found returns from his source. “Good…now, let’s see who exactly you are, Mister Rude Bodyguard.”
He opened the email and his eyes slowly widened as he read:
Cloud,
The man you have pictures of is Rudolf Doležal, believed to be responsible for seventy-eight political assassinations, including the death of the Costan warlord Maximilian Blanc – you should know, you covered that one, didn’t you? The only problem is, we can’t move on him because he’s never left physical evidence behind, and no one will testify against him. We had one thousand twelve hundred witnesses to him ripping Blanc apart at the foot of his throne, but the Costans were so pleased to free of him that they pretended dogs had done it. I mean, really, we can’t get a single one to point the finger at him. He’s gone quiet for the last six years or so, shortly after he disappeared from his home country of Chechislan, which he somehow unified ten years ago. We’ve never been able to discover how, since the Chechislans are very secretive. I’m very interested in getting updates on what he’s up to, if you wouldn’t mind moling for Interpol. Like I said, we have nothing concrete on him, but maybe you can catch him at something. I have to admit I’m a little puzzled by his presence in Midgar, especially when you said he’s been there for so long as a bodyguard to Yazoo ShinRa. Then again, if he’s looking to assassinate the current President, he might be gunning for the heir as well, and what better way than to be in his house?
The Wutain man is someone we only know as Tseng – he started out an accountant at a firm in Wutai, but somehow amassed a fortune and all but owns Dai Jiao now. He has his hands in drugs, weapons running, slaving, prostitution – you name it. He’s another slippery devil, and we’ve never been able to catch him at something. If these two are connected, Cloud, I’d say keep your eyes open. It wouldn’t surprise me if something really bad goes down in the next few weeks. Tseng is no joke, and a meeting with Doležal can’t bode well for anyone. I’d send you backup, but we’re not allowed to step foot inside President ShinRa’s territory, we can only nab them in international waters or in the outlying countries. Let me know what you dig up, and I’ll keep you informed if any more information about either of them comes to light.
Don
Cloud stared at the screen for a long, long time, shocked. Now he knew why Rude had looked familiar, he’d taken photographs of the slaughter of Maximilian Blanc, it had been his first assignment at his school newspaper, of all things. He’d slipped his parents at the resort in
“Fuck,” Cloud breathed, but that didn’t quite cover it. He was stunned, unable to make sense of it, not sure of how he should proceed. He didn’t want to pull the police into this, but he really couldn’t allow anyone to die for the sake of his story.
Grimly, he flipped open his cell and dialed the Midgar Police.

Glad you liked the episode!

Date: 2009-08-10 07:15 pm (UTC)*Sighs in relief* I'm so happy that Rude decided to take Yazoo home. I've been so worried about her. However, I must wonder what he's really pondering when he contemplates her vulnerable body. XD
Reeve/Gen.."Prove it," Yes Reeve, prove it. *nods for emphases*
“I bet your wife has got nothing on me,” she purred, smirking, rolling her hips as she walked.
Rufus uttered a short, sharp laugh and said with an odd amount of true amusement, “My dear, you have no idea.”--Pure Win! Loved it
I was surprised that it was Kadaj who spoke up for Zack. The kid must be really out of it with worry over Reno. However, this scene is bound to be interesting.
Cloud/Yuffie, He says he don't like her, yet he's always there to take care of her. Yeah...sounds like dislike to me. *giggles*
Wow, Rude is a bad bad man. And Cloud called the police, talk about drama. It's about to get ugly.
Sorry for the long review, but it really was a good episode, even if it was short.

Date: 2009-08-13 02:09 pm (UTC)I don't think Yazoo is out of the woods yet, but she is safe for now. Rude is still very scary and very dangerous, so the rest remains to be seen.
Genesis will get what he wants from Reeve, it just might take a bit of doing ;)
Rufus and Elena...don't get me started! They crack me up together! They're both so weird!
Kadaj knows that Zack doesn't do casual sex, and he is still worried about Reno. He still remembers that night, too, and saw how Reno reacted to Zack. The last thing he wants is another rival for Reno's affection.
Cloud takes care of Yuffie much in the same way as others take care of stray animals, just because you'd feel like a bastard if you didn't, lol!
And yes, Rude is The Scaries! And it is going to get very, very ugly, for sure.
And thank you for the long review! I love it!

Date: 2009-08-10 08:22 pm (UTC)I'm glad that you made Cloud such an excellent reporter. I hate it when people write Cloud as a wimp when in FF7 he never was. He kicked Sephiroth's ass.
Rude is actually more dangerous then I ever thought he would be. (yeah I know it was hinted at since he was introduced but he's like a teddy bear to Yazoo). Tseng I have no problem believing is dangerous. I'd never want to meet him, ever.
I'm scared for Yazoo now but I dont' think Rude will kill her. He's had all this time and opportunity.
The whole Reeve/Genesis/Yuffie thing is so funny. I really got a kick out of Genesis turning his bitchy attitude on Reeve and still getting to go home with him. Genesis is a god of manipulation.
I'm sending Zack a hug and a kiss. I think he needs it.
I'm definately looking forward to next week. XD

Date: 2009-08-13 02:05 pm (UTC)Rude is scary as hell but Yazoo's faith in him throws a wrench in his spokes every time. We'll have to see how it goes. And remember, he has to have her permission for whatever it is he wants to do, and he's waiting on Reno to break her heart so...yeah, I wouldn't rule out murder just yet, not from a man who is known for his political assassinations!
Genesis rocks my world, he is so unapologetically himself and fuck everyone else, lol! I wish I could be more like him!
Zack is going to need that, for reals!
Thanks so much! And talk to you soon!

happy that things are going to get interesting, and that cloud is not held back by any stupid emo regrets...he makes a cute reporter ^.^
genesis...rofl...he is very articulate...lol
zack...i hope you know what you're getting yourself into...

Date: 2009-08-13 02:01 pm (UTC)And it's ok, you are allowed to have brain-fried days :D
Cloud is definitely not emo, not this guy! He's sassy and confident and cocky, and thank you so much for saying that he makes a cute reporter!
Genesis is an unparalleled Drama Queen and I love him to the tips of his toes for it!
Pray for Zack, that's all I'm gonna say...

Date: 2009-08-10 10:54 pm (UTC)Priceless ! :D must remember that line in case of fire ! haha ! its a bit more classy that "shit, the house is on fire!"
the Rufus/Elena part was depressing :P as sordid as expected. Liked the last line of Rufus though ;)
and Rude is even worse news than I thought ! :O scary, especially considering the start of the chapter..

Date: 2009-08-13 01:58 pm (UTC)Hehe, Rufus and Elena are something else! But he does have to get his digs in at her, lol!
Yep, Rude is the scary, scary man! Yazoo is not nearly as safe as he thinks he is.
Glad you liked it!

Date: 2009-08-11 12:07 am (UTC)*absolutely GIDDY*
You mischievous creature, Genesis, baiting Reeve into such a dastardly trap. I can't even tell you how I love that scene! (Including Cloud tossing Yuffie over his shoulder; I'm kinda liking the personality you've brought to him, btw)
Yazoo is just SO naive it's PAINFUL! Of course, he has no reason to not trust Rude, and how can Rude not be soft with Yazoo. Yeah, so I know he's supposed to be some big bad guy, but still.
Rufus and Elena are cracking me up. It's kind of strange how normal Rufus seems when he's with her compared to how uptight he is otherwise (not sure that's the right word); he just seems comfortable. And his heckling Elena - good for him!
*peeks through fingers at Zack* This should be really good. And really bad. Or not. You just know how to build it up, don't you?
no subject
Date: 2009-08-13 01:56 pm (UTC)You're right, Yazoo IS really naive. Rude has protected him most of his adult life, and he has an almost unnatural lack of suspicion due to this raising, so to even consider that Rude might hurt him would be ludicrous to him. I think it's the only thing that has saved him so far, that blind trust.
Hehe! Rufus and Elena sex is certainly not what I expected! I believe they will argue through the whole thing, haha! And Rufus can't help but heckle, and it's good for Elena to have a man who won't bow down and kiss her feet, the skank, lol!
Yeah, keep your fingers crossed for Zack. He's gonna need it.

Date: 2009-08-11 02:10 am (UTC)Just wanted to drop a note to tell you how much I'm enjoying this. I found it on FFNet and followed it here a week or so ago and read all 38 episodes in one day. Now I'm one of the few people who actually looks forward to Mondays now. ;)
I like how you keep most everyone IC even though they're thrust into totally different situations. I'm also loving the suspense! Sex! Intrigue! Can't wait to see what happens next.

Date: 2009-08-13 01:52 pm (UTC)I'm really happy you think I've managed to stay true to the characters! It was a goal of mine to make them believable, and not just lift their looks to cover OC's. And we got it all here, you betcha! Hope the next episode is just as good for you! And thank you so much for the comment!

Date: 2009-08-11 11:06 am (UTC)“I know,” Zack said, and started to undress.
You DO know, that I love you, right? I have told you plenty, right? I LOVE YOU, sweetie!!!
Oh my god, just the thought of what could happen there... What I kinda hope will happen... I'm far too perverted to not want Zack to give in...
Aaaand I'm gonna stop my perverted mind from derailing into any more fantasies and await the next episode to see what happens. I will love it if Zack gives in, but I would totally understand it too, if he ends up bailing. So many secrets, and Mei Li knows far too much... *shiver* But OMG, the hotness...
And ebol Rude!!! Ooh the plot thickens! I want to know what it is he and Tseng have planned together... Is it truly the assassination of President Shinra or is there more to it than that? What is Yazoo's part in all of this??
And a certain blond, little reporter still rocks my socks! Be careful, Cloudy!!! I fear you're stepping into a furnace!!
YAY! I finally caught up! *smacks self for slacking* But what a delightful experience to have several chapters to read in one go!! Now I can't wait for the next episode!!! :D

Date: 2009-08-12 04:40 pm (UTC)Yes, Rude is scary in a lot of fundamentally disturbing ways...and that's why I luffs him :D I think when it finally comes out what he's up (which will be WAY down the road), then people will be like OMFG!
And Cloudy is the yum! He's such a sassy little shit, lol! And you haven't been slacking, boo boo! *snuggles you*

Date: 2009-08-12 08:09 pm (UTC)I never thought Rude was innocent but what Cloud dug up is really some hard stuff. Now I wonder what Cloud is trying to achieve with his call at Midgar Police.
Genesis is one sneaky bastard and he knows it! God, I love him. Let's see what Reeve is going to do. But I can't see him letting Genesis call him morally rigid. At least not without any kind of fight.
Oh Zack...I smell this is not over the next morning. But as much as I want to feel for Zack, my desire for some action between these four is much stronger.
no subject
Date: 2009-08-13 01:19 pm (UTC)Yeah, Rude is The Bad Man, but he has his reasons, and what he has planned for Yazoo I hope will surprise people.
Genesis has Reeve pegged all over the place, he knows just what to say to get the reaction he wants, and he isn't ashamed to use every trick in the book, lol! Reeve will, of course, be compelled to defend himself!
Zack is in some hot water, I'm just not sure he isn't masochist enough to enjoy it ;) We'll have to see what happens!
Glad you liked it!

Date: 2009-08-14 05:07 am (UTC)And I'm seriously worried for Yazoo. Rude doesn't know she's not a technical female, does he? Well, I'd think a child wilfully conceived between two ruling parties would certainly help solidify relations between two countries.... Or am I spouting rubbish here? I hope you're fond enough to not kill/too seriously traumatise Yazzy.
Cloud... You're showing a sudden, vaguely annoying degree of conscience all of a sudden.
And as for Mei Li, there's one thing I don't get. How does she know about the Brotherhood? Sounds to me like they're distinctive but secretive about details, so how does she know exactly what to look for?
no subject
Date: 2009-08-14 07:36 pm (UTC)Yazoo is in some serious trouble, he just doesn't realize it because he trusts too much. I do love him an awful lot, so it would be hard to do anything too horrible to him.
Cloud is shrewd, he's not about to know enough to get his ass killed and not have a backup ;)
The Brotherhood is a private organization that guards high-profile people, so anyone involved with rich and famous people like Mei Li is would know of them. The brand is a good way to know a true Brother from a false one, since your run of the mill baddies wouldn't brand themselves to pass.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the update! Thanks so much for the comment!
