Well, another Monday has rolled around, and not too much happened over the weekend, except my baby nephew had his second birthday, and if he isn't the cutest thing ever I just don't know what is :D I hope everyone had a nice weekend and that they are enjoying life in general! Here be the soap!

Kadaj angrily threw the phone down, glaring at is as if it had deeply offended him. He was trembling and upset, angry to the very core of himself, enraged with that awful woman, but he didn’t understand why.

Hours later, Kadaj was still furious enough to be shaking, one moment ready to go straight to her home and run her through, the next moment wanting to ask her if she was telling him the truth.

For so long he’d been told that he’d been given away, that his parents had not wanted him, that he’d been defective in some way and put aside. Reno had teased him that it was his temper they had feared, but that had done nothing to soothe the hard ache of betrayal inside him. He could barely remember anything before the nightmare of the Cetran whorehouse – the Freak Shows where he’d been part of the center-ring entertainment from the time he’d been six years old. He didn’t look back on the child he’d been and feel pity, no – he looked back on that child and felt pride that he’d managed to get away from it all as quickly as he had. Some never left their enslavement, were never able to get away from a life of being used up quickly and discarded early.

But anything before the haunting, sickening calliope music and the despondent, resigned, and usually horribly deformed faces of his co-workers was like a dream…

“Catch it, Sojzha! Catch the water…”

He heard the tinkling of the fountain, saw her smile…They’d been so young then, he was sure it was her! But while she claimed he’d been stolen, Reno had always adamantly insisted that he’d been tossed aside, a diamond in the rough just waiting for the hands that would shape it.

Which was the truth?

chubby fists tangled in a skein of silver hair, cyan eyes looking up at him as he was tossed into the air, the world bright and full of promise

Reno wouldn’t lie to me,” Kadaj whispered to himself, miserable. He thought of all the hard truths Reno told him, never holding anything back – no, I won’t be faithful. Yes, I have other lovers. No, I won’t say I love you…He’d never shied away from being honest with Kadaj, even when it had enraged the younger man to the point of violence.

Why, then, would this be any different?

If he wanted answers, he needed to get them from someone who had no stake in the game. Yazoo wished to draw him into her family, to make him blood-kin to the very woman who stole his lover repeatedly. Reno wanted to keep him in his bed and in command of his extensive operations.

Neither of them could be trusted.

He thought of Tseng, but knew instinctively that the man would say or do anything to get him away from Reno, so he, too, was not to be trusted.

Who was there in this big city that could find out the details of this mess? Who could give him the facts that he needed to make a decision where this was concerned? Because if he had been given, then going back to the family who had discarded him was tantamount to signing his own death-warrant.

And Kadaj had lived through far too much to do that.

But one thing was for certain, he could no longer stay with Reno and be second burner to every enticing stranger who waltzed across the man’s path. He had too much pride for such a thing, and there was simply no other recourse.

Elena fixed her best pathetic look on her face and knocked firmly on the door to Yazoo’s suite.

It took a long moment, but Yazoo finally answered, her high cheeks holding a flush of color. She seemed harried, rushed, and breathlessly said, “Elena? I didn’t expect to see you here!”

“I’m sorry,” Elena meekly said. “I had nowhere else to go…”

Concern drove back Yazoo’s excited panic, and the tall, slender woman immediately stepped aside to open the door for Elena.

            “Come in, come in.”

Elena mustered tears and stepped inside, arranging her facts as Yazoo closed the door.

“What’s happened, Elena?” the woman asked, and the ready sympathy in her eyes made Elena’s hopes soar – Yazoo was an easy mark, it was written in every inch of her.

“R…Ronald has thrown me out,” she warbled, blinking rapidly. “He didn’t send Reno his last payment and now I have to get the money to him somehow.”

Yazoo blinked a few times before she softly breathed, “Oh, dear.”

“It gets better,” Elena said, and summoned a broke, mirthless laugh. “I’m pregnant.”

Yazoo was too much of a lady to gape at her, but her shock showed clearly in her odd, green eyes.

“Does he know?” she finally asked, having regained sense enough to speak.

“No! No one knows!” Elena sobbed, and since she couldn’t risk Yazoo talking to Ronald about it and finding out the truth, she begged, “Don’t tell anyone, Yazoo! Promise me you won’t!”

“I won’t,” Yazoo assured her, trying to calm Elena down. “I won’t. But of this money you owe Reno – can’t you just appeal to him and tell him of your circumstances?”

“You don’t understand!” Elena cried, playing Yazoo’s sympathy to the hilt. “If I don’t get him his money, he’ll – ”

            “Laney, that’s enough.”

She started violently when Reno’s low, drawling voice interrupted her, and she turned to find him leaning in the doorway to Yazoo’s bedroom.

His cool blue eyes flicked to Yazoo and he murmured, “Finish packing, Cateyes. I’ll take care of this.”

Yazoo glanced nervously from one to the other, but then brushed past him to do as she was told.

Zack was in his bedroom when a knock came at the door.

He’d been considering prayer, needing some type of comfort for what he knew was happening below him. His mind still had difficulty wrapping around the fact that the people below the plate ate other humans as public rations, and that the people living above them both knew about it and didn’t care at all. It was horrifying to him, but he was slowly coming to see that it was a part of their way of life and not very likely to change.

“Coming,” he said, hastily closing up his closet and setting the lock that he’d put on since Mei Li had seen the sword. He had little hope that such a lock could stop her – after all, he’d seen her at work first-hand with those hair pins – but perhaps such a token request for privacy would appeal to her Wutain manners.

He got up and opened the door, a little flustered to find Kadaj there. The boy looked like hell, deep shadows beneath his eyes, his skin translucent.

“Kadaj,” he said, and didn’t know what else to say. What could he say after last night? They’d slept together, nothing more. Whatever it had been on Zack’s part, it hadn’t pierced the armor that surrounded Kadaj’s vicious ambition.

“I’m going to do the checks below,” the boy said, his voice cool and emotionless. “Since Reno isn’t around to do them or go with me, I will take you instead.”

Zack gave him a questioning look, not sure he knew what was going on.

Reno’s businesses below the plate,” Kadaj clarified. “We go down once a month or so to make sure things are running smoothly, but he’s been distracted lately. I can’t allow them to go longer than a month without a reminder of his presence or else they run wild.”

“And you want me to act as bodyguard for you?” Zack asked. “I don’t have any weapons, Kadaj.”

The boy smirked a little and corrected him, saying, “You don’t have any weapons that you are willing to use. But, no matter – Reno has weapons aplenty. It’s for display only, Zack. They know better than to try anything, but the threat must be valid.”

Zack nodded, knowing what Kadaj was implying. If anyone happened to resist, they would have to be brutal and merciless – two of the things Zack did well, if only unwillingly.

“I only found out about the plate this morning,” Zack said, schooling his features into a blank mask. He didn’t add anything about the Butchers, but he was determined that if he was going down there, he would find out all he could about it. Perhaps there was a way to appeal to the public, to make it stop, to put an end to such reckless violation of the human body and soul. “Is it really very dangerous?”

Kadaj lifted one eyebrow in a perfect arch over his glassy green eye but he said nothing, merely smirked.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” Zack sighed, and turned to put his heavy leather belt on, a kind of bracer with a metallic emblem long-since pounded smooth of identifying marks.

“Zack, the Underplate people are hard, they always have been,” Kadaj told him. “They have adapted to their surroundings in ways you can’t imagine, but they are people at heart. Most don’t desire to harm anyone who won’t harm them, but there are some who tend to prey on those weaker than themselves. I would say it is as dangerous as Midgar itself, in all of the very same ways, only just a little darker.”

Zack nodded, and almost asked Kadaj about the Butchers, but thought better of it.

“How do we get to and from?” he asked, thinking that there must be some heavily guarded gate, some kind of checks to get into or out of such a place.

Kadaj cocked his head and laughed a little, saying, “The lifts, how else? It isn’t quarantined, Zack – but you must have proper identification to get back up top. I had yours made when you arrived, just in case of this. Don’t worry, I used one of Reno’s identities for it. All of the ones he uses slide through ShinRa security, thanks to that oafish friend of his.”

He slid his hand into the slick leather bad slung at his hip and pulled out an ID card. It had a chip in it, some information printed into the plastic, and a photo of Zack.

“How did you get this picture?” Zack asked, heart thudding because it was a headshot he’d last seen in the Lists of the Brotherhood.

“Mei Li,” Kadaj said, watching him. “She said you might react badly when you saw it, but it was the only one she could find.”

The relief he felt that she hadn’t told anyone made Zack weak, and he quickly pocketed the ID and put a shaky hand to his head, breathing, “It’s okay, it was just a shock, that’s all. Did she say how she found it?”

“No,” Kadaj said. “Should she have? Zack, you wouldn’t be the only person hiding from the law in Reno’s House. Is there something I should know?”

Zack just gazed at him, unable to utter a lie but unable to blurt out the truth.

Kadaj sighed and said, “Let’s go. Reno bought this house because there is a lift nearby, it’s only about fifteen minutes from here, in the base of the Reactor.”

Zack was too shaken by his close call to say anything, he just fell into place at Kadaj’s side and accompanied him out of Reno’s still-sleeping house.

Reno,” Elena breathlessly said. “I didn’t know you were here – ”

“Yeah, that’s pretty obvious,” Reno said, stepping out of the doorway to close Yazoo’s bedroom door firmly behind him. His eyes were empty and cold as he sauntered over to her, an expression of icy amusement on his face.

Elena took an instinctive step backwards, her sudden fear almost choking her.

He reached out languidly as he drew near and brushed her blond hair behind her ears, cupping her face to look down at her and murmur, “Laney, Laney, Laney, won’t you ever learn?”

She swallowed hard, so close she could’ve kissed him, but nothing was further from her mind. She saw her death reflected in his unblinking blue eyes, and only had the sense to helplessly stammer, “I’m just trying to get you your money…”

“This ain’t about money,” he purred, his eyes narrowing a little. “It’s about knowing your place.”

She blinked and tears slid down her cheeks as the reality of her situation slammed home.

“Tell you what,” Reno murmured, and smoothed his thumbs over her cheeks, smearing away those welling tears. “Since you got yourself that bitty to think of, I’ll give you an extra day. ‘Cause I won’t have nobody sayin’ I didn’t give you a fighting chance.”

Frustration gripped her and she tearfully said, “You took the money he paid me! You took it all and then some! Why should I have to pay you twice over? How is that fair?”

“Fair?” Reno echoed, and smirked down at her. “Laney, this is life. When the fuck has it ever been fair?”

He let her go and lowly said, “Day after tomorrow, you bring me what you owe, and then I’ll bring you home with me and you can work ‘til you get heavy. After that, we’ll see.”

Shaking, but with little more to lose, Elena sobbed, “What makes you think I can get it?”

“Oh, I got faith in you, Laney,” Reno told her, and smirked again. “You always did have a keen instinct for survival.”

Elena wiped at her tears, already trying to think of how she could get the money.

“Go on, now,” Reno told her, and rested his hand on the doorknob of Yazoo’s bedroom. “And don’t let me catch you near Yazoo again.”

With that dire warning, Reno vanished into the bedroom.

The lift opened onto a cloud of heated steam and a sudden clamor of noise – machinery, shouting, vehicles blaring horns, music screaming from speakers haphazardly hung all over the place. And over it all, a woman’s pleasant, calm voice saying, “The ShinRa Corporation – providing you electricity, supporting your way of life…

The cloud dissipated and Zack stared around him, his mouth parted slightly with shock and his eyes growing wide as he took it all in.

Like the city above him, the Underplate had run out of room but had expanded up – towering buildings reached up into the dark depths of the plate’s support structures, mingling among garish neon lights, busted-out overheads, blaring loudspeakers, and the too-bright digital displays showing everything from reality television to informational help and, of course, the inevitable ShinRa propaganda.

“Come on,” Kadaj said, a slim, black silhouette framed against glaring signs proclaiming bars, clothing services, arcades, and weapons sales.

Zack stepped out of the lift onto the packed, concrete floor, trash eddying around his booted feet as it swirled away on rivulets of muddy water. The thick steam coated everything in humid heat, creating a dense fog that seemed to cling to the graffitied walls.

Lights of every kind illuminated the unrelenting darkness. Strings of celebration lights, street-lights, neon tubing, winking spotlights – they painted vivid, harsh colors over the stained and moldering buildings.

“This way, the exhaust fans draw the steam to the vents, it makes it hard to see here,” Kadaj said, and though he sounded at ease, his slim hand was on his souba.

Zack followed suit, ignoring his curiosity long enough to make sure the borrowed machete was close at hand. Kadaj had tried to press a more rapier-style blade on him, but Zack was comfortable with weighty, heavy blades…

Light for your crops, air for your lungs, water and food for future generations,” that voice called, and he heard it echoing in every language he could imagine, all of it being poured from those hanging overheads, the speaker a plastic-perfect woman with large, limpid eyes. “ShinRa Corporation provides excellent medical treatment and quality of care, because ShinRa Corporation cares about you

“Wow, that’s pretty thick,” Zack breathed, and saw Kadaj glance back, his young face painted in pink, blue, and yellow lights as they emerged from the fog onto the wet streets. “Why’s there so much water?”

“Condensation,” Kadaj said, and Zack was vaguely aware that they were traveling back in the direction of Reno’s House above-plate…straight towards the Butcher-drop. “The vents help, but it’s always damp and hot here.”

Zack felt his initial shock give way to his natural curiosity, and he started to scrutinize the people, realizing at once what Kadaj had meant by “hard.”

They had the sharp look of desperation, the glaring awareness that those in their midst did not belong. There was nothing friendly in their gazes, no welcome, only warning, and Zack heeded it. Long ago, their cities had been stolen from them, blocked away from the light by the city now weighing down upon them. Zack figured he’d be a little pissed off, too. The few people he saw wore patched, shapeless, and colorless clothing. Some of them seemed hale, but most had sores and a feral, hungry look about them.

The buildings, however, looked almost exactly like Reno’s House.

“When did the plate go up?” he asked, aware that as they moved deeper, it grew lighter and more busy. He saw occasional women scattered among the rough-looking men, and several groups of children, not to mention dogs, cats, and rather large rats. “Do you know anything about it?”

“Why?” Kadaj questioned, and ahead Zack saw a neon sign of people having graphic group sex, and arrows pointing in one direction. Along the way were billboards, worn and stained by water, proclaiming, “Reno’s – best pussy and ass around, and you can put your money on it.” This statement was punctuated by faded paintings of a woman’s naked, splayed body, her genitals covered in Gil and her large breasts cupped in her own hands.

Zack wrinkled his nose at it, put off by the lewdness of the picture that trivialized something intimate and wonderful, making it a cartoon mockery of what it really was. Sanitized, rendered down, and packaged for quick sale, that was what Reno’s was all about.

“It’s just that all of the buildings I’ve seen so far look like they were built at the same time as Reno’s,” Zack said, dreading their arrival at a place that had less than a billionth of the pimp’s Upperplate establishment, if the advertisements were any indication.

Reno’s house was built during the Industrial Age,” Kadaj said, his walk fluid and graceful. Apparently, he was well known below the plate – though they got some ugly looks shot their way, no one attempted to bother them. “All of these places were undergoing an Industrial revolution when the notion of the Plate came up. The idea was taken because the city of Midgar was on a terrace above, carved out of the mountain. That is where Reno’s house is built, on that original terrace. It was the primary ironworks for the city back then, and that was saying something because the population boomed and really hasn’t stopped since. The man in charge of Midgar could not expand anywhere to accommodate them because of the mountain, so he built out and slowly covered the other cities.”

He looked back and smirked, saying, “Reno’s House is the only one not standing on miles of dirt and concrete over empty air and other people – it still sits on the solid rock of the mountain where the factory is. The vents from below had to be carved out beneath it. The historical society refused to sell to him at first, but his stupid ShinRa friend made them.”

“So now a national treasure of history is a whorehouse,” Zack sighed.

Kadaj laughed a little and said, “It’s fitting. After all, the people of Midgar deliberately consigned these people to death. I like that their important history is the setting for the lurid deeds of their politicians and religious leaders. It is worth only that.”

Zack frowned, but said nothing more as they arrived at a spot roughly beneath the front of Reno’s Upperplate House.

Women, men, and young ones of both sexes lined the structure that was more carved into the rock than built. More vivid lights graced every available surface, and the whores hawked their wares in loud, harsh voices, calling out to the passing men and women on the thronged streets. It was a confusion of barking dogs, squalling babies, hissing vents, shouting vendors, and that ever-present ShinRa spiel about how the Corporation was doing so much for the people living in such squalid, disgusting conditions.

Zack glanced around again just to make sure no one was sneaking up behind them, and as he did so his eye was caught by a sign hanging from the barely-visible supports of the plate. It was crisp, sharp, and to the point, official-looking, like the highway signs or signs at the Midgar Airport.

“City of Midgar Department of Public Food Services, Sector Seven.”

And splashed in blood-red paint beneath it was graffitied the word, “Butchers.”

“You need to rest, darling,” Scarlet scolded, finding Ronald out of bed again, his hair mussed and his pajamas rumpled from his restless sleep. He was pale and strained, the lines etched deeply on his face.

She put the dinner tray down on the dresser and shooed him back to bed, ignoring his protests.

“Lazard is downstairs in the parlor,” she informed him, picking up the tray and settling it over his hips. “He’s come to update you on the meeting.”

Ronald perked up a bit, but when he lifted a spoonful of soup to his lips, his hand shook so badly that nearly all of it spilled out. Frustrated and shamed by how weak he’d become, he put the spoon down in the bowl, defeated.

“He tells me that Rufus has been beyond reproach lately,” Scarlet told him, ignoring the trembling. As she spoke, she took the bowl of soup and carried it into his den, calling back over her shoulder, “He thinks there may be hope yet, especially if Rufus believes he may lose your position.”

She returned with the soup in a lidded cup, poked a straw into it, and placed it back on the tray without comment.

“Thank you, my dear,” Ronal murmured, and it hurt her to see him so humbled, unable to even lift a spoon to his lips. He sipped the soup for a moment and finally said, “Would you bring him up, please?”

Scarlet nodded, but instead fetched a brush from his dresser to smooth the wild tufts of his hair.

Ronald laughed softly and kissed her hand when she was through, saying, “Thank you, Scarlet, for helping an old man keep his dignity.”

She leaned down, kissed his clammy brow, and gently said, “I’ll be back in a moment, darling.”

“Insufferable tyrant!” Rufus snarled, storming into his suite. “Denzel! Denzel!”

            Oi?”

Rufus glared at the young man when he popped into the suite from parts unknown.

            “Where the fuck were you?”

“Television room,” Denzel said, unrepentant. “I work eighteen plus hours a day now, Mister Rufus, Sir, and you don’t pay me overtime. Plus you got that grouchy blond lady running me ragged – ”

“Quit complaining and go get me some dinner!” Rufus snapped, pulling his tie off and flinging it down on top of his discarded briefcase.

Denzel grumbled his way off to order the cooks back to work, a scowl on his young face.

“My, my, you’re in a mood,” Elena purred, appearing from the doorway to his room.

“Don’t you have tricks to turn somewhere?” Rufus huffed, yanking his jacket off and throwing it at her.

“No, I’m out of the business, remember?” Elena reminded him, and shook the jacket out before draping it carefully over the back of a nearby chair. “What’s your problem?”

Lazard!” Rufus spat, and made a bee-line for his bar to pour himself a drink. “That arrogant ass is already moving into my father’s office!”

Elena’s eyes widened when she was reminded of the suave, blond vice-president, and then promptly narrowed with calculation.

“Lazard, huh? Yeah, your father really loves him, almost like a son,” she said. “He was always at the house. I don’t think your father ever made a decision without him…Guess he’s a better replacement than you are.”

“You know what? You should go visit Yazoo – she could use a cunt,” Rufus snapped, and laughed heartily at the strange suggestion.

“Fuck you,” Elena said. “That Denzel kid needs a beating.”

“Mind your own business, you rotten whore,” Rufus warned her. “Denzel is very nearly almost like family. You, however, are just a parasite carrying a future parasite, so watch your mouth!”

Denzel returned then to let Rufus know his dinner would be up within ten minutes, and Rufus curtly dismissed him to go home, wanting some peace and quite.

Elena retreated to the bedroom and placed a call to Lazard, hoping she still had his correct number. After a few rings he picked up, his voice cool and business-like when he said his name.

“It’s Elena,” she said, no preamble necessary.

“I wondered how long it would take you to surface,” the man said, amused. “And to what do I owe this singularly unpleasant pleasure?”

“Hey, don’t be such a smarmy bastard,” Elena said, snide. “I have some info on Rufus you might be interested in.”

Lazard said nothing, but she could feel his questioning anticipation.

“It’s going to cost you,” she added.

After a moment, Lazard said, “I never could fault your head for business, Elena. What do you have?”

“He’s setting up his wife for something and he’s using Reno to get to her,” she told him. “There’s a lot more, but I want cash in hand.”

“Very well,” Lazard said, amused. “Meet me in my office tomorrow and we’ll work out the details.”

Dear gods!

What are you on? Never mind, just give me more!

Just blazed through all 47 parts (found a rec, I think from Etraxis(?))and am absolutely hooked. If the soaps on tv were like this, I would so watch them.

Hot, steamy smut - check
Somehow spot-on characterizations (Tseng, Rude, and Cloud especially) - check
Wonderfully convuluted plot(s) - check
Dark, gory, unapologetically horryfying themes - check
Genderfuck of any and all varieties including but not limited to off-handed comments on what marks you as a certain gender - check
Genesis in all of his melodramatic glory (Genesis and Yuffie are probably the most terrifying pair ever) - check
Humor, mostly nasty - check
Somehow keeping me interested without having more than one phonecall from Sephiroth - somehow, yes, and I don't know how that happened ;)
"Flowing" language that just slithers right into your brain - check (your dialogue is to die for - sharp and snappy)
Did I mention the smut?
And the smut?
And how the world and the background keeps growing?

If I have to pick out what has my interest the most, it's ... damn. Can't decide...

Yazoo and Rude fascinates me. I keep waiting for Yazoo to, ahem, grow a pair and catch on to at least some of what's going on, and I really, really, really want more Rude. Love your Rude to pieces, I tell you;

Genesis, Yuffie, and Cloud's suspicions re: Rude, Reno, and Tseng. The first is shrewd enough to do the thinking and Cloud is nasty enough to act on it. Mmm, love the nerve you've given him;

Zack needs cuddles and a cause ;)

Did I mention I'm mostly in this fandom because of Sephiroth? While he is as deep in denial as Kadaj, I would squee loudly over seeing the Jenovas take a more active role and interaction between father and son (so, the fireworks might end the world, but hey, it'll be entertaining!);

and last, but not least:

Where, oh where is my favorite potion master Hojo?

Anyway, just wanted to let you know all of your work is much appreciated :)

OMG! You read ALL of the chapters in one go?! That's freaking outstanding, lol! I can't tackle that kind of reading, I'd get bored and shove off, hehe! Do you mean Etrixan? She's Etrix here, and she's amazing, I have her fanfic journal as a link up in my sidebar.

Thank you so much for leaving me such an amazing and fantastic comment! I'm really happy that my soap is working all the angles for you! It started out as a joke, seriously! But then it took a turn for the odd and just got a life of it's own, hehe. I really have to say that it continues because of the readers who give me their thoughts and suggestions. I wanted something we all could have a part in, and we all have fun with it!

Rude is one of my favorite FFVII characters, simply because (like Tseng) we know so little about him. It gives me more room to be creative! And Yazoo's character here I was afraid would put people off, but the gender-confusion thing has been received surprisingly well, so I'm just working on making his/her story as interesting as possible!

Genesis is a hoot to write, he's just so carefree! But he's no fool, and so he picks up a lot of what Yuffie dumbasses away, and Cloud is cocky, nosy, and fearless, so thank you for the compliment! I'm glad you like his nerve!

Zack DOES need that! He's lost as just a handyman, because he was so much more in his previous life. But we have to see how it pans out for him :D

Sephiroth will come into play more as Yazoo's story winds down. I'm trying to balance introducing characters and my timing so that there is always something new happening. *sweats* Believe me, when he and Kadaj come face to face, there's gonna be problems :D

Hojo will make it, have no fear! I intend to bring in every possible person I can from the FFVII world!

Thank you so much, kiddo! I really appreciate you taking the time to read all of the episodes, and leaving me such an amazing comment! Update is next Monday as always!

*hugs you to bits*

Excellent episode. I was on the edge of my seat. I was hopeing to find out who you were bringing up from under the plate. I'm still hoping it's Aeris. Aeris and Zack <3 *sigh*

I liked the description of under the plate. I can see it so vividly. The condensation problem and bright lights everywhere were a nice touch.

Freaking Elena is seriously becoming my favorite character. By all rights she should be running the hell away, taking her life, or sitting in the corner crying, but she just keeps fighting. I'm rooting for her. Go Elena!

I'm glad to see daddy Shinra again. Is he very sick? Like Deathly Sick? How much longer do you think he's got? I am dieing of curiosity to find out what Elena is up to and how it will play out.

I'm glad to see that Kadaj is smart enough to distrust all the idiots in his life and not ignore what Yazoo told him. I'm rooting for Kadaj too.

I can't wait till next Monday. XD

Thank you, kiddo! I'm glad to hear that it did the trick for you! The person coming up from under the plate will be a bit in the future, I always try to plan a little long-term (although usually I end up whipping all of this out of my ass on Sunday night, hehe!).

I tried to get a certain feeling for the Underplate, and I think I got it. I'm really happy you liked it! It's nice to know that it worked!

Elena is starting to get quite the fanbase! I'm so proud of her! I think it's because she just doesn't STOP. Like you said, she keeps on fighting, and that is seriously admirable!

Yes, ShinRa Senior is VERY sick, but I don't make any bets on how long he'll be around for...

*Helps you root for Kadaj* Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Thanks, honey!

What a brilliant episode, Auntie Jaded ! :D I loved the description of Reno whore house in the lower plate ! "“Reno’s – best pussy and ass around, and you can put your money on it.” " XDDDDD !!!!!!!

What a strange underworld you have created ! It reminded me of Blade Runner ! Just as dark, futuristic and sinister !

And Elena.. I knew it ! She is not very lucky, isnt she ?

And who is Kadaj going to ask about his childhood ? :D

thanks for a great chapter ! XD

Aw, thank you so much, honey! I'm glad you liked it! And yeah, hehe, had to come up with something blunt and skanky for Reno's sign down there - after all, he was in business below the plate before he bought his way up top.

I think I was influenced a lot by Blade Runner, actually. It was the first sci-fi movie I had ever seen and I was madly in love with Roy Batty (he was my first crush as a little girl *noms Rutger Hauer*). I wanted it to be something like a city that never sleeps. They have no daylight to go on, so it's mass confusion all of the time. And even with all of the lights, it's still dark there, still oppressive. But I also wanted to make it a lot like what it was in the game when little pixel-Cloud is hopping all over the place with a little blur of a Reno chasing him. :D

Elena may not be too lucky in our way of thinking, but she certainly won't let that stop her, hehe!

Kadaj will have to find someone nosy who has contacts...Hm....:D

Thank YOU for the great comment, boo boo!

*squeezes you*

I love that movie ! :D Rutger Hauer was so sexy and that scene just before he dies was totally heartbreaking.. sob :( When I saw Loz, I thought of him for some reasons.. same type of tough guy. And his girlfriend in the movie, who looked like a beautiful doll and was a bit of an acrobat would have made a nice Yazoo :P
Looking forward to next week !
*snuggles you !* XDDD

Oh, HELL yes. Lazard, you conniving, smarmy, cunning, sexy motherfucking bastard! *dances with glee* LMAO, I just thought that maybe Elena should seduce Lazard to get knocked up... I mean, it's still Shinra genes! *giggles madly* Unless she somehow already is pregnant, though I got the impression that Rufus was too intoxicated to be shooting anything but blanks. *dies* And I love the "Your father loves him like a son"... lmfao. I can't wait for the scene with them! I'm so excited and happy that Lazard is back. *continues dancing around the room*

And the scene with Scarlet made me go awwwww. Rufus really is a dickface. lmao. And Reno catching Elena. Smooth motherfucker! This was great.

From: [identity profile] jaded-grin.livejournal.com
Haha! I knew you'd like this one! Lazard is turning out to be a lot of fun to write! And there's no telling what he and Elena will get up to, for reals. Although, I don't know in this one if he IS a ShinRa - I've taken a lot of liberties with the usual family associations (Seph is Yazoo's brother, Kadaj is Yazoo's nephew, etc.) but it will be interesting to the extreme if he actually turns out to be one ;)

Rufus might've been too drunk to actually perform to standard, but he hasn't drowned his swimmers, that's for sure. So yeah, *cackles madly*!

Yep, Rufus is a dickface, for sure!

Glad you liked it, boo boo!

He really is fun to write. Rufus has had to move over and make room for him in my heart... and he's not happy! XD But two evil plotting diabolical Shinra bastards are better than one *dies*

Ah, true that. Well, having it be a mystery is still fun *giggle*

LMAO. That's an amazing way to put it. We'll have to see what happens.

Oh, excellent chapter, dear!! :D I'm really rooting for Elena now, more so than before, and love the addition of Lazard to her tangled web. As always, can't wait 'til next Monday!!!

Hey, thank you, honey! I'm glad you liked it! And Elena is developing quite the following, lol! I'm actually pretty glad of that, she's starting to really grow on me! Lazard would be her best co-conspirator, I would think - both of them want something, and they both are willing to do anything to have it, so match made in heaven, I say. *snuggles you* Thanks so much again, kiddo!

Kadaj... doh! he was so close to reaching out to someone, don't back out now! But on the other hand, he took Zack with him down below. Could this lead to something a little... more... between them? *Big Eyes*

Lazard's reappearance is a w00t! And Elena's right on that. I have to agree with sussurous. No matter what you many think of Elena's (lack of moral) character, she doesn't know how to quit. Even without Reno's threat, she would still keep fighting to retain the spot she's obtained. I think I'd be really upset if Reno did kill her off (or relegate her to second-story status) because then who could I admire with such disparaging comments?

I am soooo looking forward to the next episode!

Hehe! *melts beneath the power of the Big Eyes* Here's hoping that Kadaj will turn to Zack in the end! He's just such a confused teenager that there's really no telling - now, just to find him someone willing to dig up dirt on someone else...hm...I don't think we have anyone like THAT here, lol!

Yes, Lazard is back by popular demand, hehe! Actually, I had promised to bring him in more to add a dimension to the Rufus/Yazoo/Reno plot, so he's starting to take a bigger roll. And I'm starting to really admire Elena - baby's got some BALLS. And I like her too much to kill her off now, lol! Oh, how things have changed!

Thank you so much, Etrix! You're the best *glomps you*

Freakin' wow!

After I got hooked on to A Hard Time, your dear RP friend Zilldk turned me in this direction and told me that if I really liked your writing, I would love this too.

And Zilldk was right! I, believe it or not, read 46 Episodes in just a few days. I'm completely hooked, and I'm also not one for soaps. But damn I'm glad that I took the advice. I love it, and I can't wait for more!

From: [identity profile] jaded-grin.livejournal.com
Aw, yay! I'm glad you're enjoying it! Zill is my bestest buddy, I'll have to thank her for sending you this way!

And kudos to you for reading all of the episodes in one go! I've thought about going back and doing that just to reacquaint myself with the plots, but then I'm like No Fucking WAY! LOL! So wow *gives you a pat on the back*!

Next update next Monday! And thank you so much for your awesome comment!

Kadaj is a smart boy. I'm glad he knows what's going on and that he needs to get the fuck out of Reno's house. As for the lower plate, they eat people but they let the cats and dogs live? You know, it doesn't seem like such a bad place at all, lol!

I'm kinda hesitant in believing that the lower plate residents actually are cannibals and the threats are nothing but terror tactics but who the hell knows...Reno is such a sick fuck.

From: [identity profile] jaded-grin.livejournal.com
:D That's my kind of world, too! LOL! Nah, it'll all be explained when the time is right, but I think you're one of the few who caught that, so WOOT!

Kadaj is slowly making his plans - he isn't about to jump into anything without thinking it through and finding the best angle, so it may take him some time, but when he goes, he's going to do his best to draw blood from Reno, so they all better watch out!

Reno IS a sick fuck, but he was born and raised up beneath the plate, so anything going on down there isn't really his doing, it's been going on for centuries. However, that still doesn't counter the fact that when he has a body to be disposed of, he drops it down the chute to the Underplate :D

That is such an awesome description of your below plate world, because when I think about it, it's creepy as all hell, and completely plausible. o.O

And please ignore my comment last time re Tifa. I was thinking about it in the shower and realised that she'd already been accounted for. >.<

I think this is probably the first fic ever in which I've loved Scarlet. She's looking after Ronald but still allowing him some dignity. Keeps him looking neat, adapts the arrangements so he can feed himself still. It's wonderful. Their marriage failed, but she's still so caring.

Aw, thank you so much, boo boo! I'm glad that everyone is digging the Underplate world! (no pun intended, hahaha!) I wanted it to be scary and dark but have a strange, morbid draw to it :D

And hehe, duly ignored, honey! But...in the shower?! *tickles you* Hahaha!

Aw, I'm glad you like Scarlet! She's another one of those characters in the game who was very interesting to me! She cares about Ronald very much - she only left him because he traded her for politics, not because she didn't love him anymore. So this is sort of a bittersweet time for her, because he's only asked for her companionship when he's dying. Hopefully, she'll find someone else when the ouchies have stopped...

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, kiddo! *squeezes you tight*

I love the dark magic you've worked with the world under the Plate, like some else said I've got to agree, very Blade Runner-ish, very post-apocalypic.

And Elena *shakes her head* I don't know if I'm amused by her or want to smack her. Goodness.

Kadaj, dear god I want to cuddle that boy he is PRECIOUS, simply precious!

Hey, thank you! Yes, definitely some Blade Runner inspiration there! It was my first ever sci-fi movie, and it made quite the impact! But I also tried to keep it kinda junky and dirty like it was in the game.

Elena is something else! But you know what? I admire her balls! She's one hell of a determined woman, so I can see where that smile at or smack reaction would come in :D

Hehe! Glad you like Kadaj! He's a far sight different than any Kadaj I've ever written, but hopefully he will make some good choices *keeps fingers crossed*

Nuuuuu!! T_T My heart breaks for Zack!! D= He needs lots and lots of love. =( Why do nice guys always finish last?! I'm usually a Cloud/Kadaj fan, but you've totally sold Zack/Kadaj to me with this!! <3 your Zack~ I'm totally rooting for him! ^_^

I'm so glad I found this treasure. I stumbled on it on FFN first, and I'm so happy I checked your LJ and discovered more of it!! I devoured the entire thing in like 3 days. (It would've been 1 if I didn't have school and homework. XD)

I hope Kadaj and Yazoo will unite and become family again! I totally adore family!YazooKadaj! And since Sephiroth made a semi-appearance, do we get to see some of Loz too?? Loz is such a sweetie.~ <3

And I don't want to see Yazoo getting hurt. =( I want Reno/Yazoo love but not if Reno is just playing with him. T_T Btw, I don't mind the gender-bending for the most part, but it is a little upsetting when Reno starts referring to Yazoo as "she" and not as a "he-who-makes-a-gorgeous-woman!"

I also found Genesis and Reeve to be such a comedy relief well placed between the serious dramas! I LOLed at Cloud being paparazzi. And I absolutely HATE Rufus with Elena as a close second.

Anyway, I really can't wait to read more of it! I'll be reading this religiously every Monday from now on. ;D So don't disappoint me! <3

Zack DOES need lots of love! And I'm not sure why nice guys finish last, but when they DO finish, they finish BEST :D And hehe, YAY for Zack/Kadaj! I'll see if I can work something out ;)

And I'm glad to hear that you found this on FFN! I was so hesitant to put it up there, but a good friend of mine insisted, and I'm pleased so see so many new faces here on LJ catching up on the soap! Haha, reading it all in one day would be cruel and unusual punishment *snuggles you*, but I'm glad you've enjoyed it so much!

There is quite a bit that can happen in the soap, and I love suggestions and possible plots, so if you can think of anything, let me know! I hope to bring in all of the characters eventually, but it will take time!

As for Yazoo - I'm afraid that getting hurt is just what is going to happen. He has to learn about life the hard way after having lived in a bubble for so long. And don't be upset when Reno calls Yazoo a "she" - he considers Yazoo a woman, which is something that Yazoo appreciates :D (even if he is a he-who-makes-a-gorgeous-woman)

Genesis and Reeve are silly and I love them! And you're right, they are there for the comedy - so much of this got so much darker than I'd planned for that they add much-needed light! Hehe, there's a looooooooooong line of people who despise Rufus, but surprisingly more and more of them are rooting for Elena! HA!

I hope I won't disappoint you! And thank you so much for your comment!

A-MA-ZING!

What a strong episode dear! The disturbing images of the Butcher's city still flash on my mind...a mix of Blade Runner and Mad Max...shivers dowm ny spine.
Other one who is making this to me too is Reno! Yeah, now you showed the real man for us..and he's everything but a good soul...
And I have to congratulate you for Elena- she grew in the soap and her fight for survival really is something that I'm enjoying very much to see. She got balls, she got tricks under the sleeve...
And Kadaj...poor baby...maybe he'll find help on Cloud??
The kid is a survivor and a Janova...what he will do after he knows the truth? Poor Reno...I can hear the butchers sharpening their knives...

Hugs and love dear and thank you again for another wonderful chapter.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you like Elena! She is really turning out to be something, isn't she? She won't let anything stop her, that is for sure!

And Kadaj...yes, he will get his answers, and Reno may just rue the day :D

Hugs and love to you, honey! I miss your beautiful drawings!

Go Kadaj! It's about TIME! Now I get to wonder who he's going to get his info from?

Zack? Hon? RUN! What in the world is he thinking?

Elena needs a spanking. And I can't decide whether that's in a good way or bad.

I'm a little late commenting, huh? And do you know how hard it is to not look ahead and see what happens as I'm trying to catch up? Oh, the temptation! XD
